A party and a farewell to League Two
A look at Port Vale on and off the pitch after the final game of a promotion season
Hello and welcome to our Sunday morning edition of The Valiant for May 4.
Vale were able to enjoy their promotion to League One as a 1-0 defeat at home to Gillingham didn’t spoil the party in front of more than 13,000.
Doncaster’s two first half goals in a 2-1 win at Notts County meant the title was never in reach for Vale who finish second having already secured promotion with last week’s win at Wimbledon.
Aaron Rowe’s powerful strike from the edge of the area in the 56th-minute was enough to edge out a Vale side who went closest when Lorent Tolaj fired over from close range just before the break.
Substitute Jayden Stockley threatened a leveller but Gareth Ainsworth’s side held on before Vale celebrated their return to League One with a lap of honour and celebrations with supporters in the stands.
