Chislett puts Vale back on track in Wigan thriller
An in-depth look at Port Vale on and off the pitch after the 3-2 win at home to Wigan Athletic
Won it. Threw it away. Won it again. Port Vale edged out Wigan 3-2 as Ethan Chislett’s hat-trick carried them to victory in a terrific game at Vale Park.
The result ended the Latics’ nine-game unbeaten run, helped Vale bury the disappointment of their FA Cup defeat to Stevenage….and set them up nicely for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup quarter final at home to Middlesbrough.
Chislett put Vale in front when he swept home Gavin Massey’s low cross on 21 minutes then doubled the lead on 43 minutes when he collected Ollie Arblaster’s pass before steering the ball home from 12 yards.
That was the least Vale deserved for an excellent first-half performance but Wigan were given a foothold back into the game when Chris Sze netted on 63 minutes in front of their 1,300 travelling fans in the Bycars.
Charlie Wyke levelled from Callum McManaman’s cross on 77 minutes but Vale picked themselves up to grab the winner thanks to Chislett’s 25-yard effort six minutes later, a goal and a win that lifts Andy Crosby’s side two places to 15th.
We’ve got news, analysis, opinion and reaction from an important win, plus nostalgia and more.
