Loft winner at Burton gives Vale new hope
An in-depth look at Port Vale after their 1-0 win at Burton Albion in League One
Hello and welcome to our Sunday morning edition of The Valiant for March 24.
Port Vale aren’t done yet. Ryan Loft’s 83rd-minute goal gave them a 1-0 win at Burton Albion to revive their survival hopes.
Their travelling supporters chanted ‘we are staying up’ at full time and, although there is still plenty to do, Vale have at least given themselves a chance with a richly-deserved victory that lifts them to fourth-from-bottom on 36 points, now just three points adrift of safety. Fifth-from-bottom Cambridge have 39 points having played the same number of games while sixth-from-bottom Burton also have 39, but have played a game more.
Vale had much the better of this relegation battle. They went close through Loft and James Wilson before the break, although Connor Ripley had to make a smart save to deny Mark Helm.
But the Vale were the better side in the second half before their pressure finally told when Loft netted from close range after Ethan Chislett hit the post.
