Resilient Vale back in the frame
A look at Port Vale after a 3-2 win at home to Newport County in League Two
Hello and welcome to our Sunday edition of The Valiant for January 19.
Vale are back in the automatic promotion places in third after twice coming from behind to beat Newport in a Vale Park thriller.
Darren Moore’s side had to earn it, having fallen behind on 12 minutes when Bobby Kamwa headed home at the far post from a corner. Ben Garrity met Jaheim Headley’s inswinging corner with a powerful header to level on 29 minutes but the visitors regained the lead when Cameron Evans wriggled free to head home a 33rd-minute free kick.
The Vale, helped by substitutes Jayden Stockley, Rekeem Harper and Tom Sang, were much better after the break although they had to rely on Nathan Smith for a goal-saving challenge to deny Kai Whitmore.
They made the most of the reprieve to level when Smith set up Stockley from close range on 62 minutes, then got the winner they deserved on 77 when Jaheim Headley squeezed a low shot past Jacob Carney.
Newport’s Kyle Jameson was sent off on 87 minutes for a second yellow card but Vale were clearly on top by then.
