History-makers. Port Vale are into the quarter finals of the League Cup for the first time. More than that, this was a terrific performance to win 1-0 at unbeaten Mansfield.

Awful in a 2-1 defeat at home to Cheltenham on Saturday, Vale’s response was outstanding as they took the game to the Stags and were well worth a victory secured by Alfie Devine’s excellent 50th-minute finish.

Mansfield hadn’t lost for 19 games from the start of the season but the League Two side had no answer to a Vale performance full of style and substance as they played some flowing football mixed with industry and determination to get their season back on track.
