Vale’s problems grow with comprehensive Derby defeat
A look at Port Vale in our Sunday March 3 edition after a 3-0 defeat at Derby County
Port Vale remain lodged in the relegation zone after they were easily beaten at promotion-chasing Derby.
Vale gifted the Rams a fifth-minute opener when Kacper Lopata deflected Louie Sibley’s shot from the edge of the area past Connor Ripley. Keeper Ripley made fine saves to deny Nathanel Mendez-Laing and Max Bird, and Tom Barkhuizen missed a sitter, but Vale then enjoyed their best spell of the game, only to concede on 44 minutes when Dwight Gayle was left free to head home.
Ben Garrity came close just after the break but Sibley volleyed home at the far post on 58 minutes to kill off any thoughts of a comeback and leave Vale third from bottom and without a win in 11 games.
